CHAPTER TWELVE

Double Self

I dreaded the night. The instant I tried to sleep, the images waiting behind my eyes replayed in a gory slide-show. Conrad, the body, the blood-stained graves. The message scrawled in the old church: THERE ARE NO ANGELS.

It hurt to keep my eyes open, but I couldn’t deal with those thoughts right now. I opened my laptop and typed a barely coherent email to Cyrus, giving a rundown of the events of that weekend.

His response came almost immediately: “Holy. Crap. Okay. It’s gonna take me a while to process all that.”

Of course, being in a different time zone, six or seven hours behind, Cyrus would think this a reasonable time. I guessed he’d replied from his phone; it would be too much of a coincidence that he’d be at a computer the exact same time my message arrived. What did it matter, anyway? My brain was so tired I overthought everything and twisted the tiniest thing into a knot.

“I know, right? I never thought the harpies would turn on the venators. I honestly thought they had them under control.”

“What did the venators do?” Cyrus replied. “Please tell me they reported it to the Inner Circle.”

“Yeah, but they didn’t do a thing. Claudia and I went to talk to them and they just said they’d relied on the harpies for so long they wouldn’t stop using them after a freak accident, or whatever.”

“Freak accident? That was an attack. They need to get their priorities in order. Did dear old Dad have anything to say?”

“Mr Blake? Shit, I forgot he was your dad for a minute there. That was stupid. Yeah, Claudia and I saw him sneaking off into the tunnels yesterday actually. I don’t know what he was doing or where he was going. It got too dark for us to follow.”

“I don’t trust him. Hell, I’ve never trusted him since he joined the higher-ups. There’s something up with the Inner Circle. It’d serve him right if one of the harpies took his eyes out. Man, Leo’s gonna freak.”

My heart did this ridiculous flip. For God’s sake.

“You’re going to tell him?”

“’Course I am. He’ll want to know. What were the other Inner Circle members like, anyway?”

“There was this woman who was like Dr Philips, only scarier. Ms Constantine, she said her name was. And this blond guy who didn’t say much. I don’t know whether he agreed with the others or not.”

“Might be Mr Fraser? He used to be a good guy. Well, for one of them. Came round to our house a couple of times. Leo used to make trouble, as you can imagine.”

Those words caused my chest to tighten painfully, and I tried to shut my mind to the rush of memories. As I was already trying to suppress so much, I only partially succeeded.

“Anyway. I gotta go. You take care of yourself, Ash. You sure you want to carry on working for them?”

“I want to know more about Lucifer, about all the shit that’s going on. I think they’re the only people who can tell me.
